AN OPEN MIND, AN OPEN BOOK
We all have our peculiarities – here are six random facts about me!
As any traveller will tell you, getting to know a place – and person – is all in the details. When I started this blog, I decided to be as true to myself and my vision of travel as possible. This obviously means that there is no room for facades and masks. So who am I? Well, I could give you a blow-by-blow account of my life trajectory, starting from kindergarten, but I think you, my lovely readers, will get a better idea of who I truly am from these random and interesting facts.
(As for the rest of the details, I’m sure you’ll catch bits and pieces in all my stories, photos and blogs! For now, enjoy these eccentric points!)
- Once, during the most popular festival in Belgium (no, not Tomorrowland… I’m talking about Rock Werchter), I found myself in the Marquee tent way up front, having a blast. All was smooth sailing until I suddenly realized I had lost my flip-flops in the crowd…uh oh! And what did I do? A high jump, of course! I leapt high and got stuck between huge, strong guys, which meant my feet no longer touched the ground anymore (yup, that’s how crowded and sweaty those concerts are). Problem solved! So, clearly, I love to be right by the stage, part of an insane crowd, dancing like crazy. If you want to see me freak out and scream “This is my song, this is my song!” on repeat, just put on No Problem by Chase & Status. Needless to say, I take no responsibility for what happens after that. I go all in, always.
- There was a time when I checked into a hostel in Berlin, and a shitty one, at that. I totally could have kept drowning in my misery of not finding suitable housing, but that very night, I went to a concert alone for the first time – a Sunset Sons gig – and loved it. Oh, and guess how long I ended up staying in that hostel? SIX WHOLE WEEKS. Yeah, I get myself into some pretty weird situations, but always end up making the most of them.
- According to my mother, three-year-old Charlotte always wanted to see one specific cartoon. Here’s the strange part: it was a Czech one called Krtek and I didn’t understand a single word! I still laugh when I imagine the sick toddler version of me whining“ ‘t Molletje, mamaaaa, ‘t Molletje”! As funny as that is, I think this was the first time I understood that we don’t need to speak the same language to understand one another. (Oh wait! Coming to think of it, the mole in the cartoon explores unusual places and meets strangers, all in a bid to help his sick friend – maybe it had more of an impact on me than I previously thought!).
- Even though I’m a wanderer at heart, there’s a particular place that I long for, a place that I just need: Heist, a seaside village in Belgium. As you know, I try to live life to the fullest and am super busy most of the time. However, even I need to unplug and recharge from time to time – and no place better for this than Heist. Here, I just lay on the couch and stare at the sea for hours… and I never get bored. There’s a song that reminds me of that feeling of absolute contentment: Ludovico Einaudi’s Una Mattina from the movie The Intouchables. The first time I saw the film was here, and I’m writing these words here, too. This song, this film and this place will always hold a special place in my heart.
- Scents I adore include camomille, verveine and lemon.
- Although I have lots and lots of favourite songs related to travel, these are my top five favourite tracks related to feelings:
- Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits
- Youth by Daughter
- Good Riddance (Time of your life) by Green Day
- The River by Bruce Springsteen
- Lips by The XX
And that’s quite some intense sharing for the day! Will be back with another post soon. As always, feel free to drop a line, interact, and ask me anything.
