Because of the current state of the world, sustainable travel is no longer just a neat idea we can ponder over. It is truly a necessity, as each trip has reinforced this in more ways than I can count. TravelRebel aims to drive this point home.
So, I may be a seasoned traveler but, at the core, I’m just someone who truly hopes to encourage more people to travel respectfully, with their eyes – and mind – wide open.

 

So I’ve been thinking… when we are blessed enough to stumble on a spot like this, a pearl that seems so untarnished, what should we do? As a die-hard Lion King fan, you can imagine why I instantly thought of Pride Rock when I saw this formation. Awe inspiring, isn't it? I could stare at it all day! Anyway, in typical Charlotte fashion, I couldn't help myself and reconstructed the scene... But you'll have to use your imagination to see little Simba there because I never use Photoshop! I keep seeing Blue Flags across the west coast of Portugal and they really make my heart sing! Sounds weird, I know, but hear me out: these aren't just regular flags, these symbolize a commitment to sustainability that I wholeheartedly salute and support. These international awards (yes, a blue flag is indeed an award) are given to beaches, boat operators and marinas that are determined to uphold high levels of sustainable development of their areas, such as environmental protection and management, water quality, safety and security, social responsibility and so much more. You know, from a distance, my life seems like fun and games -- all this traveling, all this excitement. And yes, that is true, but most people don’t realize the work that comes with it. I’m not complaining… far from it actually. I am so grateful that I can see and feel the world. But it’s time for a truth bomb: I have a hard time stopping myself from working. I feel ridiculous amounts of guilt when I take a break. And I’ve always been this way. Do you get that? How did this self-realization dawn on me? Well, my body finally told me I was nuts when I found myself on the highway one day, driving at a ridiculous speed, and I temporarily went blind in one eye. Half my face went numb and I had to park every 10 meters to throw up. And you know how toxic this cycle is? Even then, I didn’t fully understand. Even after that episode, I kept pushing. I just realigned my energy ad started my own company. But now, I’ve learned my lesson. I’ve grown. My travel has a lot to do with opening my eyes, my mind. Even though I still work a lot, still fail a lot, I take time off. I prioritize family and friends. Ok, this is why I do what I do. We unknowingly discovered the most INSANE beaches ever. Powerful and majestic waves, no plastic in sight, almost no tourists, and the most ruggedly beautiful nature all around -- it’s unreal. It took us seconds to simultaneously agree that this location is extremely vulnerable to the perils of mass tourism. And so, in the spirit of sustainability, I’ve had to make a tough decision: I’m not geotagging this place. Go on and explore for yourself, rebels. These annual European road trips have become somewhat a tradition. A wonderful tradition. Even though I’ve been to France, Spain and Portugal more times than I can count, I still discover beautiful new places every single year. So much to see and experience, so close to home.
